With just a few hours to spare before torrential rains struck the area, the first CALVMX
practice of 2008 went off without a hitch at Barona Raceway. Ominous dark clouds were in
the northern skies, but a good turnout of almost 70 riders turned out for a great session of
riding on a well-prepped Barona track. In addition to the motocross crowd, the CALVMX
trials contingent was out to test themselves on several sections setup around the Barona
facility.

Prior to the beginning of practice, CALVMX board member/spokesperson Frank Vrettas
updated those present on the plans the club has for 2008. One of the highlights was the
announcement of a season long raffle, with the grand prizes being three vintage and
post-vintage bikes going to the winning ticket holders. In addition to the grand prizes,
upwards of 25 to 30 more items will awarded to winning ticket holders.

Club members will receive one raffle ticket for each class they enter on scheduled race
days. At the end of the season, a drawing for the will be held. To claim the prize, the
winning ticket holder must be present. Otherwise, the prize will go to another ticket holder.
Another addition for the 2008 season is the MODERN MAN class for club members owning
modern bikes. At the conclusion of the regular race day, one 30-minute moto will be held
for the modern bikes. All entrants in this class must be CALVMX members.

The track at Barona was in excellent condition. Recent rains had done quite a lot of
damage to the course. Hard work by the track owners resulted in a long course with great
traction and a virtually no dust to contend with. It was great to see familiar faces Kyle
Winton, Charles Hilton, Craig Walker, and Gary Faxon back on the course. Winton and
Faxon appeared to be in midseason form based on the speed they were displaying during
the day. Former board member Dave Scourfield attended strictly as a rider. After years of
sacrificing his own riding time to devote to club activities, Scourfield was relishing his new
role as a full time race participant. Look for him to be a challenger for the coveted Ironman
trophy this year.

The racing season officially begins February 16 with round one of the 2008 season at
Barona. As always, the club can always use volunteers on race day. Additionally,
sponsors are always in demand. Any member wishing to advertise their business by
becoming a sponsor or knows of potential sponsors is encouraged to contact Frank
Vrettas with their information.

2008 looks to be a banner year for CALVMX and the sport of vintage/post-vintage racing.
As one of the strongest vintage clubs on the west coast, all members are encouraged to
participate in as many events as possible. New members are always welcome, as there is
a class for all machines and all skill levels of riders.
